Keynote Speakers

Friday
The VOEA is pleased to announce the first Keynote Speaker for the conference will be Leonie Rowan, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at Deakin University. Leonie is involved in leading the Deakin University Quality Learning Research Priority Area which has as its core commitment ‘To conduct internationally significant research that will enable educators of today to ‘future proof’ Australia’s children for the changing, uncertain and risky world of tomorrow’.

It’s not difficult to see the connections with our conference theme as we seek to identify how it is that the distinctive offering outdoor educators make enhances the learning of students through interaction with uncertainty and risk.

In an interview on ABC Radio National’s Life Matters program Leonie shared some of her perspectives on ‘future-proofing’:

“What we need to do is give kids a sense that they can actually cope with whatever is going to come at them in the future.  So what we are about is creating schools, learning environments, where kids can be future proofed, where we can actually give them a positive sense of themselves as learners, as citizens, as active participants in the world around them so that whatever happens they feel like they have got the resources to draw upon to be able to respond to that…We need to get the kids to experience the real world in a kind of safe managed process. Obviously we have still got teachers there helping them manage these interactions but they need to be in a real live situation.  We need to get kids…actually solving real world problems with real world significance, so that they get that sense that they’ve contributed to the world they are living in, that it isn’t just this scary, nasty place out there that’s out to get them but it’s a world they’re actually involved in creating.” (22 November 2005)

Leonie Rowan's Powerpoint Presentation

Saturday
We are pleased to announce that our Keynote Speaker for Saturday’s program will be Mark Dobson. Mark has extensive experience leading, developing and facilitating outdoor and experiential learning. Through his keynote presentation Mark will share insights from his diverse experiences of working with young people in experiential programs around the world. From New York in the days after September 11 to facilitating a recent Muslim Youth Summit in Melbourne Mark brings unique perspectives on how young people are engaging with uncertainty and how outdoor and experiential programs can contribute to their wellbeing.
