We are the Weather Makers

Tim Flannery’s book, “We are The Weather Makers” is a concise young adults version of his best selling book, ‘The Weather Makers’. It is an extremely powerful book and a great teaching tool about climate change.

Tim reminds us that we are all connected – from the Arctic to the Outback - by climate, and our climate is influenced by how we choose to live, how we use our fuels, our water and our land. We are the Weather Makers includes a glossary, information on ways to help the environment and facts, figures and recommendations. It also lists internet sites, reference books and brochures for further research.

Flannery has set up a website to accompany the book and there is a good schools resource section to support the book.

The activities on this site follow the five parts of We are the Weather Makers. These are:
• The Atmosphere;
• One in Ten Thousand;
• The Science of Prediction;
• People in Greenhouses; and
• The Solution.

The book is structured so that it can be studied within an individual subject (such as Science, English or Geography), or across subject areas. Activities are broadly stated, allow for the demonstration of a wide range of skills and many are open ended.

In 2007 there will be a nationwide schools competition to raise awareness of climate change based on We are the Weather Makers. All Australian secondary schools are challenged to come up with imaginative and effective ways to increase awareness of carbon emissions in the local community. The prizes are as follows:

FIRST: a personal visit to the winning school from Professor Tim Flannery.

SECOND: books from Text Publishing to the value of $1500.

THIRD: a free class set of Tim Flannery’s book, We are the Weather Makers.
